North of Loop 1604 the soil quits early — a few inches of caliche, then solid Hill Country limestone. For a pergola, that rock is an asset: we drill footings straight into it and the structure stands as if it grew there. Closer to downtown, expansive clay calls for deeper piers sized for ground that moves with the seasons.
Sizing for Texas wind is the other half of the job. San Antonio's spring storms arrive fast and hit open new-build lots harder than sheltered oak-canopy yards, so post spacing, beam sizing, and anchoring are engineered rather than eyeballed. Cedar suits the established neighborhoods; engineered steel suits exposed lots and owners done with restaining.

Cedar looks right immediately and fits the older oak-shaded neighborhoods, but it asks for periodic sealing under this sun. Engineered steel holds its finish through the long summers and takes wind loading with slimmer profiles, which suits the exposed lots on the far north and west sides.
