The good news is that a sound slab can often stay and become the base for a new deck. The catch is that whether it can, and how, depends on details you cannot see from the surface.

Decking over concrete is not automatically simpler than building from the ground up. Height, drainage, door thresholds, and the condition of the slab all decide whether the project is a clean conversion or a teardown. This guide walks through when the slab can stay, the framing methods that make it work, the clearances that make or break it, and why the snap-together deck tiles sold for exactly this job tend to disappoint over time.

Why homeowners deck over an existing concrete patio

The motivation is almost always the same: an existing slab that has done its time. Builder-grade patios crack as our clay soils move, stain from years of weather and grill grease, sit at an awkward height, or are simply a flat gray rectangle that does nothing for the yard. A deck laid over that slab gives you a warm wood or low-maintenance composite surface, hides the concrete entirely, and can even out a patio that pitches or steps unevenly.

There is a practical appeal, too. If the slab is sound, it can serve as a ready-made base — less excavation, less dirt work, and often a faster build than pouring footings from scratch. That is the promise, and when the conditions are right it holds. But a slab is only a good base if it is structurally sound and sheds water correctly, which is the first thing we check rather than assume.

Building a deck over a concrete patio works when the slab underneath is genuinely sound and well-behaved. That means concrete that is not actively heaving or breaking apart, with hairline cracks at most rather than sections that have shifted to different heights; a surface that still drains away from the house; and enough vertical room between the slab and the nearest door threshold to add framing and boards without stepping up over the door. When those hold, the slab stays and becomes the base.

The slab has to go — or the plan has to change — when the concrete is badly spalling, crumbling, or heaved into mismatched planes, when it slopes back toward the house and traps water, or when there simply is not enough height to build up without blocking a door, a weep screed, or the flashing at the wall. Forcing a deck over a failing or wrongly draining slab just passes those problems up into the new surface. Sleeper spacing is set by the board and the direction it runs, the same as any deck frame.

Where the slab is out of level or the surface below needs to be dead-flat — as a composite deck does — adjustable pedestals earn their keep, screwing up or down to bring every point to a true plane over an uneven slab. On builds where headroom under a door is tight, low-profile steel or aluminum framing buys back precious height that dimensional lumber would eat up. The method follows the slab and the clearance, not the other way around.

Drainage, slope, height and door-threshold clearance

Drainage is the detail that quietly decides success. The slab was poured to shed water a certain way, and the new frame cannot dam it up — the sleepers have to run so water still escapes and moves away from the house, not pool against the foundation. Keeping the boards elevated and gapped lets the whole assembly dry, so nothing sits wet against the concrete or the framing after a storm.

Height is the other hard constraint, and doors set the ceiling. Every layer — sleeper, board, any leveling — raises the finished surface, and the deck cannot rise above the threshold of the door it serves or interfere with the flashing and weep details at the wall. A slab that already sits high under the door may leave no room to build, which pushes the project toward removing the concrete. And once a deck stands high enough above grade, code requires a guard, so a rising build can trigger railing and inspection requirements that were not there before.

Wood vs. composite vs. steel-framed decks over a slab

The surface you choose interacts with the slab conversion. A wood deck over sleepers is the most economical route and looks natural quickly, at the cost of the ongoing sanding, staining, and sealing wood always needs. Composite is arguably the better match for this job specifically — a capped board wants a flat, dry, ventilated base, which is exactly what a properly built sleeper-and-pedestal system over a slab provides, and it ends the maintenance cycle for good.

DIY deck tiles vs. a permanently framed deck, and what a pro handles

The internet is full of snap-together deck tiles marketed for exactly this — click them over a slab in an afternoon. For a renter or a strictly temporary fix, they are fine. As a permanent solution they disappoint, and predictably: laid directly on the concrete, they trap moisture underneath, telegraph every crack and slope in the slab below, shift and gap as they expand and contract, and fade unevenly while their joints collect dirt and sprout weeds. They do not drain, they do not level, and they do not last.

A permanently framed deck solves all of that because it is engineered to — it drains, it levels an imperfect slab, and it is built to stand for decades. It also brings the responsibilities of real construction: raising the surface, tying into the house, or adding a guard can trigger a permit and inspection, and any connection to the house has to be flashed correctly so water does not get behind the wall. Can I build a deck over my existing concrete patio?
